A Girl Named Genny is based in Rochester, NY. The band incorporates traditional folk instruments to produce a new sound that encompasses several genres and styles. The band began with long time summer camp friends Ray Mahar (vocals/guitar), Steve Burke (keys/guitar/vocals), Brad Delano (banjo/vocals), and Zac Lijewski (viola/vocals) getting together to sing a few originals, and then spending the rest of the night covering Avett Brothers songs.
Eager to play shows, the band brought on Dylan Niver (drums) to fill their sound more, and began to play bigger rooms in and outside of Rochester. The group has played several shows in the Ohio area, as well as more western New York. Slowly they began to wedge their foot in the door of incredible musicianship that exists in Rochester. Daniel Kushner of the ROC CITY Newspaper said in an article back in December 2016, “A Girl Named Genny will get your blood pumping with its earnest brand of folk. Whether the band is playing lovely down-home ballads or songs fit for a hootenanny, the infectiousness of the music is undeniable.”
Within a year the band released their first self-titled EP, a five track taste of the band’s growing catalogue. It can be found on Spotify, Apple Music, and all other major music outlets. Since its release, they have added a sixth member, Mike Wall (bass/vocals) who completed the sound and string section they needed. Now the band is looking ahead to it’s second year with plans to record a full length album, book its first tour, and continue to show Rochester the same amount of love they continuously receive at every venue in town. Your support means the world to the band, not only as musicians, but as people who recognize the great fortune and kindness of the musical exchange in Western NY!
